About the Series
Meet Your Guides
Two very different approaches to history, walking the same road.
Gary
The Enthusiastic Storyteller
Gary is the audience’s way into every episode — endlessly curious, quick with a vivid image, and never afraid to ask the “obvious” question. He paints pictures with his commentary, imagining sieges, storms, and street life as if he were there. He’s also, famously, often wrong — confidently misdating a battle by three centuries or insisting a Victorian dock was “basically Roman” — which is exactly what gives Steve the opening to set the record straight.
Off camera, Gary is the one who insists on the local pie shop and always, always, wants to see inside the crypt.
Steve
The Calm Historian
Steve is the steady hand — a working historian who has spent years in archives, on digs, and in libraries most people don’t know exist. He supplies the context behind Gary’s flights of fancy: the dates, the sources, the “well, actually” that turns a good story into a true one. He delivers corrections with warmth rather than condescension, and has an uncanny knack for finding the one detail that makes an entire location click into place.
Off camera, Steve is the one with the flask of tea, the OS map, and a suspicious number of guidebooks in the car boot.
The Chemistry
What makes Two For The Road work is the gap between Gary’s imagination and Steve’s precision — and how happily they close it together. Gary represents the audience’s curiosity, asking the question everyone’s thinking (even when it’s the wrong one), while Steve supplies the depth of knowledge to answer it properly. The result is history that feels like a conversation between friends: approachable, a little chaotic, always informative, and often very funny.
